Laser Therapy
Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers are instruments which convert electrical energy into light energy. They operate on the principle of selective photo-thermolysis, the ability to target and destroy a specific tissue without significantly damaging surrounding tissues. Lasers have been used by dermatologists since the 1960's for the treatment of skin lesions, although their use has only become generally accepted in the last 10-15 years. Most recently, they have been improved to the point where they now offer significant advantages over standard techniques in the treatment of a variety of cutaneous lesions.
Although there are many lasers used in dermatology, each for very different applications, we have chosen to use several that historically have provided excellent results with low risk of permanent side effects. These are the Flashed Lamp Pulse Dye Laser for the treatment of red colored lesions, and Q Switched ND Yag and Alexandrite lasers for the treatment of brown or black colored lesions, including tattoos. Both are administered by Drs. Laila Almeida and Harvey Weinberg.
